The Trekkers group undertakes the most challenging of the Skye u3a walks. Usually between 6-10 miles in summer โ sometimes less in the depths of winter โ these walks often include more challenging terrain: boggy, rough ground, some elevation and a reasonable level of fitness is needed.
Our most recent walks have included Dalavil in Sleat, Ramasaig to Lorgill, Rubha Hunish, and Fladda on Raasay. There is always time to stop on the way: for lunch, often cake, and occasionally fires/BBQs on the destination beach and there is always great companionship. We always look out for wildlife, plants and sites of interest. Our group numbers vary from 6-12, usually around 8. Ideas for new walks are welcomed.
Trekkers meet on the first Wednesday of each month, with the second Wednesday as back up in case of inclement weather.
In 2024, a number of our walks were cancelled due to poor weather. We donโt mind some rain but really โ last year! Here is a taste of what we did get up to!
Sligachan to Braes on the 8th of April
After what seemed like a lifetime of the fickle Skye weather toying with us and postponing this walk, we finally got a nice forecast. On a Wednesday. We were good to go.
The number of mighty rivers we crossed - many of them previously undiscovered - meant this seemed more like u3a waders or in Jonathan's case, u3a paddlers. The weather held all day and five intrepid trekkers had some stunning views and great company all the way to Braes. We successfully avoided an ill fated attempt to rescue a stranded buoy and made our way back to the swamps of Slig, where tired feet led to us recrossing the streams without a care to whether our feet got wet this time.
The Quiraing on the 4th of February
Trekkers explored the length of the Quiraing whilst it wasn't inundated with tourists.
Camas Barabhaig, Sleat on the 3rd of December
Brave trekkers braved the December cold, winter rain and northern wids to walk along the coast to Camas Barabhaig. In a eord - Bracing!
There were sufficient breaks in the showers to give some lovely views over to the mainland and the walk finished with tea, coffee, mince pies and Lebkuchen at Sheila's
